After the huge success of the Taiwan Festival last year, the Southside is preparing for a new format which will see four of the Sunnybank district’s major shopping centres join forces to celebrate Queensland Cultural Diversity Week during the first week of September.
Sunnybank Plaza, Sunny Park Shopping Centre, Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown and Calamvale Central, all under the banner of YFG Shopping Centres, will team up with the Australian Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce Queensland (ATCCQ) to host the jam-packed week of celebrations.
Taiwan Festival CEO and President of ATCCQ, Paul Shih said the week (1 – 6 September) will include cultural dance performances, art displays, centre-wide savings across all four centres and much more.
“We’ve also got lots of fantastic prizes up for grabs including air tickets, and a brand new Mazda 2, along with a number of prizes donated from local businesses”.
Mr Shih said the event would also include the launch of Calamvale Central’s night market and a fireworks display at Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown on the final night of the event.
“The night markets have been inspired by the night markets in Taiwan and will host specialty stalls selling everything from the ever popular Taiwanese fried chicken to clothing, and even games from Taiwan.” he said.
Mr Shih said that after the success of the Taiwan Festival the last couple of years, he’s excited to present this new format to the public.
“We launched the Taiwan Festival in 2012 and had over 50,000 attendees, the year after, over 70,000 people visited!”
“We’ve been in contact with countless local organisations over the last several months to put this event together, all in the name of celebrating the unique multicultural district we live in!”
One of the key aspects of this year’s Taiwan Festival is the week long Shopping Festival at all four centres, developed in the spirit of the popular Taiwan Department Store anniversary sales.
Mr Shih said customers could download the Taiwan Festival app on iTunes to take advantage of the huge savings at each centre.
“Some retailers are discounting as high as 60%, with others offering buy one, get one free offers and much more! Sunnybank Plaza will also be doing special 10 minutes offers on the final day of the celebrations” Mr Shih said.

This year we are partnering with YFG Shopping Centres, Taiwan Festival is set to grow bigger and better in 2014 by extending the program over to a week instead of two days and expanding across four shopping centres instead of a single venue.
Proudly supported by the Oversea Community Affairs Council Republic of China (Taiwan) as one of the largest overseas Taiwan Festival in the world, by the Queensland State Government as significant event of the Queensland Multicultural Week and by the Brisbane City Council as major multicultural festival, Taiwan Festival Week will set new record this year and continue to promote culture exchange between Taiwan and Australia, introducing Taiwanese traditional and popular culture to the Multicultural communities in Brisbane. This would increase community awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity and its benefits during the Queensland Multicultural Week as well as celebrating the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) this year.
Event Details:
Dates: Monday 1st of September to Saturday 6th of September

Multiple Festivities:
As trialed in the 2012 and 2013 Taiwan Festival, subsidiary events such as the Taiwan Film Festival and Taiwan Beef Noodle Festival proved to be very successful promotion of the main Festivity. The 2014 Taiwan Festival Week will combine multiple festivities and create greater influences to the general public.
We are working with the YFG Shopping Centres to recreate the Taiwan Shopping Experience with Taiwan Shopping Festival right here at the Southside of Brisbane. Special sales promotions will happen across retailers during the first week of September and we aim to boost the shopping centres traffic over the Taiwan Festival Week to achieve a win-win outcome with our sponsors.
